Beat the Heat and Cool off at the Best Rooftop Terraces in Malaga

This blog post was originally posted on April 19th, 2016 and was updated on July 14th, 2017

Malaga is a city that is lucky enough to enjoy almost 300 days of sun a year. That is considerably more than other parts of Spain.

It is also protected by the mountains to the North and the Mediterranean Sea to the South, so we have a little microclimate that makes it very easy for us to enjoy socializing outdoors. This includes tapas bars with outdoor seating, lots of chiringüitos (restaurants along the beach that often serve fried fish and espetos), and now rooftop bars, as well.

The best rooftop bars in Malaga are found at hotels in the city center. And, since Malaga is a relatively small city, you can get a good view from any one of them. Some are better for seeing the port and others if you want a view of the historic center, or even a view of the moorish fort (the Alcazaba). But which are our favorites? Here’s our top five rooftop terraces in Malaga!

1. Alcazaba Premium Hostel

The rooftop bar at the Alcazaba Premium Hostel is one of the newer rooftop terraces in Malaga, and it has a beautiful view of the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle. We mainly like it because of its great views and the fact that (for now) it is lesser known, but it’s good to note that the drinks are generously poured and the DJ is relatively good as well!

If you head there in the late afternoon you will see a mix of ages and people, from older businessmen closing a deal to tourists enjoying the scenery. At night, look out for malagueños who are discovering the beautiful views by night. This is one of the best rooftop bars in the historic center and one that we find ourselves often visiting!

Address: Calle Alcazabilla, 12

2. Hotel Molina Lario

Located right in the center of town, Hotel Molina Lario is a great place to get views of the historic center of Malaga. It is near the Cathedral and while during the day the rooftop can get warm, when the night cools off, this is a great place to come get a drink and cool off with a beautiful view of the port, as well as the Cathedral.

Address: Calle Molina Lario, 20

3. Hotel Room Mate Larios

Located on the most famous street in Malaga, Calle Marques de Larios, the Hotel Room Mate offers some beautiful cityscapes. It is a great way to get above it all, and people watch as all of Malaga walks by. It is only open during the warmer months, so make sure to check in advance.

Address: Calle Marqués de Larios, 2

AC Malaga Palacio is one of the best rooftop terraces in Malaga

4. AC Malaga

This is one of our favorite rooftop terraces in Malaga. Also located next to the Cathedral, the AC Malaga´s rooftop bar is higher up with great views of the port area. In the summer it’s a wonderful place to enjoy the breeze coming in off the water, and in the winter they provide blankets and space heaters so you can cuddle up and have a nice relaxing drink in the evening.

Address: Cortina del Muelle, 1

5. Salles Hotel Malaga Centro

If you are looking for a slightly calmer rooftop bar in Malaga, the Salles Hotel Malaga Centro has a smaller terrace where you can find views of the city center. The Cathedral is a bit farther off in the distance and you are isolated from the sea breeze, but nevertheless, it is always nice to get up above it all and enjoy your drink peacefully.

Address: Calle Mármoles, 6

Whichever rooftop you choose, we’re sure you will welcome the chance to get a different perspective of our beautiful city. There is just something magical about being on top of a building where things are a bit quieter and you are a bit closer to the clouds.

While you are in Malaga don’t forget to join us on a food tour! We will try wonderful foods, sample great wines, and learn all about Malaga’s unique story while we are at it.
